WHAT IS MANGOSTEEN?
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical evergreen tree that grows mainly in the South Pacific Islands and Malaysia where it can reach heights of 20- 80 feet.
Known as "Queen of Fruits", mangosteen is deep, reddish purple when ripe and produces a fragrant edible flesh that is creamy in texture and sweet. It tastes somewhat like citrus combined with a peach. Because the mangosteen is tasty, has a pleasant fragrance and appearance, and is highly nutritious, it has been included in a new group of fruits called superfruits*. Superfruits are known to possess extremely high levels of nutrients and/or antioxidants.
Studies of Mangosteen reveal that it contains (among other nutrients) a group of extremely powerful antioxidants known as xanthones. Because of this high antioxidant strength, it possesses significant potential for combating human diseases.
Mangosteen and its derivatives have become popularized in the US in a variety of products (see product comparisons).
